Phone lock screens for tabletop RPGs

The players have the missing woman’s phone and cannot unlock it. They do not need to: the lock screen tells them who has been trying to reach her, what she had planned for tonight and which app remembers something she does not.

What the screen shows

The status bar with the carrier, the signal and the battery; a large clock and the date; a line the owner left for whoever finds it; and a stack of notifications, each a message, a missed call, an email, a calendar event, a news alert or anything else, with the app, the sender, the time and a preview cut off where a real phone would cut it. Each notification comes from a palette, drags into order on the screen, and takes its icon from its kind. Leave the network empty and the bars go with it: no service. A wallpaper of your own fills the screen behind it all.

Three phones

Light mode and dark mode are the same modern phone at noon and at midnight; the cyberpunk handset is a neon device from the age of implants, locked to its owner’s face. The page is 71 × 150 mm, the size of an ordinary smartphone, at 300 DPI: cut it out, glue it to card and lay it face down on the table. What was sent from it is a Message; before there were phones, urgent news came by Telegram.
